What would you do if I sang out of tune?

Lloyd busking 018I’m doing a workshop intro to social media for a client at the end of the month and they just sent me through a draft agenda – mine is just one in a series that they’re doing at a two-day staff event. On the agenda mine is entitled “Libraries gave us power” I had no idea what this was a reference to, so I asked and was told that they’d given all the workshops names from song lyrics (mine was apparently from the Manic Street Preachers or some similar popular beat combo – perhaps they think I’m Welsh?) Anyway they also asked if I had a lyric that I’d prefer and so, of course, rather than thinking it through for myself, I asked my outsourced brain, aka my twittermates, to come up with suggestions for me.

They did not let me down.

Phew! I think some people got confused some way in and thought we were looking for music to play, but that’s the way these conversations go. So I think I’ll go with @stml’s suggestion which I’ll expand a little to “I get by with a little help from my friends” thanks James, I owe you one! But there are some other great suggestions in there – I’d love to try “Rabbit” and “Paranoid Android” might have been particularly appropriate for this audience if not the subject matter.

Thank you everybody for contributing – another twitter crowd-sourcing legend for the books.

  1. Oh, I knew that you were looking for lyrics, but I still think that you should have The Flumps as walk-on music.

I’d love to organise a Ruby on Rails conference and have the walk-on music be Kaiser Chief’s Ruby, with the refrain “Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby!” By the end of the day, no one would be able to look or hear the word ‘ruby’ and still see it as a real world. Funny how, if you repeatedly type a word out enough, it stops looking like a word at all.

  2. Great response but honestly I would have stuck with ‘Libraries Gave Us Power”.
Before it was a Manics Lyric in was an inscription above the entrance to Newport Central Library:

“The library was built for the poor of the town around the turn of the 20th century, a first class public facility to enable those less fortunate to better themselves.”

  3. Londonfilmgeek’s TMbG ‘Birdhouse in your Soul’ quote was particularly funny in the context of social networking… But if I’d known you’d been given this Manic’s quote initially I’d probably have also suggested you stick with them and this song – they’re rather fine and that song is one of their best with a apt title and meaning – “Design for Life”.

  4. Thanks for providing respite from rather tedious work for a moment anyway, Lloyd – crowdsource us again!

  5. Still sad that Rabbit got sidelined, nay mind.

This whole thing reminds me of my staff training at Warwick Castle many moons ago where they played a compilation tape of songs with the words ‘magic’ in the title before launching into staff training on how ‘magic’ the potwash in the kitchen was, and how ‘magic’ disgruntled tourists were….
