I've just tried Fargo, and I'll admit I don't get it.

This might be because I use Evernote a lot, and I am not sure what Fargo would give me that Evernote can't.

One thing that strikes me is that, because it works in a browser, I doubt it would work offline - one of the (many) great things about Evernote. I haven't tried using Fargo offline, though.

This was only a cursory try, though; I may come back to it!

Dave, you're welcome, thanks for slimming the product down and introducing it gently like this. I'm glad to see your work coming to fruition.

One thing that came up when I responded to someone who commented somewhere else was this:

I really appreciate being able to repurpose my writing as it evolves - I often write something for some other purpose and then think "Oh this needs to be a post" - this makes it a lot easier for me to focus on writing and thinking rather than where it's going to end up. Thanks again. I'm looking forward to seeing what else unfolds :)

Lloyd, thanks for sharing your impressions of Fargo. :-)

I love reading comments like this from people using the product.

It helps me get a feel for how it's working, what ideas are getting through, where we have more work to do.

Back in the day when software came in shrinkwrap boxes I'd read stacks of regcards religiously. We always left a big area where people could say whatever they wanted. We also asked for phone numbers, so if I was reading a regcard and wondered what they meant, I could just dial the number and ask. People were generally happy to talk, and were happy to hear from the CEO of the company.

It's so important to get the whole experience of the product, or as close to the whole experience as you can.

Yes, it's a complex, tricky and thorny subject. One person is many things to many people and I am always astonished that people refer to MT as the perpertrator of great evil when in effect it was not a party of one but of many elected representatives who should be credited for the changes that came about. As their leader MT may have been prepared to shoulder the burdens of their actions and equally any praise and been motivated in that leadership, rightly or wrongly by a deep conviction, but lack of concensus or not, our Government is still, was and has been for some time a democracy. MT was hardly the only 'personality' in charge at Westminster; votes were passed, debate was had. We all have a shared responsibility to take part in the debate and stand up for the good still to be found in our Country. Margaret Thatcher may be dead but there are still good things, good deeds and good people to be found on every street corner across the UK....

You probably can't - but her death provides an important opportunity to examine what her political philosophy actually did to the country and what sort of society it created - not just in terms of the conflicts at the time, but the longer term 'legacy'. That still has huge relevance today, when we have a government more determined than Thatcher ever was to surrender its responsibilities to society to the so-called free market.

Lloyd is right - neither jeering or cheering are appropriate - we need to take the conflict out of the occasion and instead create some perspective not least because we still have not been able to create an idea that can stand as effective counter to Thatcherism and we thus allow today's Thatcherites to persist in hawking the view that the only alternative is 1970s style state socialism.

This was my bash at it - http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/richard-stacy/a-thought-on-margaret-thatcher_b_3044066.html

That is a very good response. I have refrained from writing about Mararet Thatcher's death, mostly because others have done so much more articulately than I could, also because I believe her death has nothing to do with it - the systems and structures she put in place (and from which I am sure I have profited!) which have done so much damage are still largely there.

Though I am not sure how you'll be able to do all that without mention Thatcher or her colleagues...!

Hi Lloyd
I'm currently working up plans for what I suspect might be Dudley's first ever unconference ... and we fully intend to involve young people. They probably won't be in a majority - the unconference is serving as a launch event for Healthwatch Dudley so needs to involve a range of people who use health and social care services, as well as children's services, but we're going to work hard to involve young people. I bumped in to an unemployed young person on Friday who I know through some work in Coseley, and promptly recruited him on to our unconference planning group! He's our first young volunteer, and I hope that being involved will be helpful to him too. I'll let you know how it goes :)

Jonathan, thank you, I think this is to do with the metadata that they're adding that's talked about here: https://dev.twitter.com/blog/introducing-new-metadata-for-tweets

Looking at a search on twitter.com in the browser, you get options for Top/All/People you follow - I assume that "Top" (the default) is the one that filters out the nasties and that it's connected to the filtering_value attribute mentioned in the post above. I'm guessing then that folk like hootsuite haven't yet integrated this new metadata to their searches, but that it is available and will hopefully be in new releases of the apps.

But that's a lot of assuming :)

Of course, if I am right, ie that twitter themselves are able to filter out the rubbish for users of their apps then it also implies that they are letting the unexpurgated spammy stream feed in to their competitors. In one way that is fair enough, I guess.

I noticed that the stream was particularly bad when I was following on Hootsuite but much less of a problem when using the actual Twitter App. This suggests that there is scope for competition between the Twitter "integrators" (for want of a better word) on quality of spam filtering, and this may actual create a useful competitive dynamic (re your 3 above). Hootsuite is dead to me for conferences now, but Twitter isn't.

Lloyd,

good post. It did get a bit confusing as the official and unofficial Tweets combined. I was not sure whether #DigitalWomen and #WomenInDigital were discussions on virtual lady's of the night.
